This year, with all that has transpired,
it's so fitting to reflect on how the
Christmas story began.
We all know how wonderfully the story ends, however the
opening events certainly tested Joseph and Mary's trust in God.
For Joseph, news of Mary's pregnancy must have come as a
remarkable shock, followed, no doubt, by many questions. All
his plans had been dashed and life suddenly changed.
Mary, too, had to choose to trust God unflinchingly as she faced an uncertain future. And
it all took place against a backdrop of widespread social upheaval, ushered in by Caesar's
census.
What joy Joseph and Mary must have ultimately felt to see God's plan unfold for them –
their story woven into Christ's story in such a miraculous way.
Sudden change, uncertainty, widespread disruption, scattered families – doesn't Joseph
and Mary's story seem so relevant to us today?
Perhaps Christmas will look a little different for you this year. Even if it's not exactly as you
imagined, I pray that you will be able to celebrate with abundant joy nevertheless, sure
in the knowledge that you and your loved ones are always in the Lord's care. Nothing is
unexpected to him.
